Dusk and Her Embrace

In my first review of Cradle of Filth (the review of The Principle of Evil Made Flesh) I considered it to be the 'greatest ever black metal release'. This was true at the time and it remained that way until the Vempire EP came out. Then, in my Vempire review , I had to update my judgement to hold Vempire as the greatest black metal release. Now, it has happened again. I must go back on what I said on these previous two occasions because Dusk and Her Embrace surpasses Vempire in what is, without doubt, the pinnacle of black metal perfection. Cradle of Filth have improved every step of the way so far. |
| Dusk and Her Embrace marked the end of Cradle of Filth's association with Cacophonous Records. Ever since TPoEMF was recorded, Cradle of Filth had been in conflict with Cacophonous for a number of reasons. They did a poor job with promoting and distributing TPoEMF (I get a lot of people telling me that they can't find this album), they provided no tour support for the album, and furthermore, they paid the band none of the royalties gained from the album's sales! This resulted in a battle between the band and Cacophonous which was eventually settled out of court. The settlement meant that they had to record Vempire for Cacophonous (again with no royalties) in order to release them from their contract with the label. Dusk and Her Embrace is recorded under the Music for Nations label, who appear to treat the band much better. |

As a result of the trouble with Cacophonous Records, Paul Allen quit the band. Additionally Paul Ryan and Benjamin were fired from the band due to poor performance and personal differences with the band. These members were replaced with Stuart, Damien, and Gian for Dusk and Her Embrace. Dusk was originally recorded in January 1995 with the ex-members of the band. However, Dani and Nicholas were disappointed with the efforts of the ex-members in this original recording, so the new members Damien and Stuart re-constructed the old version to come up with the release version of the album. According to Nicholas, the release version of the album represents 70% new material and 30% old ideas (from the original recording). |

Dusk and Her Embrace is the ultimate black metal album. It contains all of the best qualities
from Cradle of Filth's previous albums done to perfection, with the addition of original and
innovative new ideas. Dusk has an 'Epic' quality to it that you will become fond of. The
atmosphere is stunningly created by the synth based instrumentals. There are two purely
instrumental tracks on the album, but most other tracks also begin with a synth interlude.
This atmosphere sets the scene and provides the basis for the classic songs that follow.
Dusk is a majestic masterpiece. It is best described as majestic, but one could also describe the feeling of the album as epic, triumphant, romantic and arrogant. It is able to combine the delicacy of melody with the brutality of war. The combination of powerful atmospheric synth with guitar rhythms of true feeling is the highlight of the album for me. Dani, in this album, introduces high pitched 'thousand words per minute' screaming in a number of sections to great effect. This adds to the many voices he has used in previous albums to increase variety and keep things interesting. Overall, Dusk does not use as many alternative guest voices as in previous albums, but those that are present are very good. I cannot find fault in any of the tracks on Dusk. It is obvious that it is an extremely polished performance from true professionals. However, I do still have a favourite section of the album. The three consecutive tracks: Nocturnal Supremacy '96, Malice Through the Looking Glass, and Dusk and Her Embrace, are probably the most listened to tracks of any album for me. |

The first track in this set, Nocturnal Supremacy '96, is essentially the same as Nocturnal Supremacy from the Vempire EP. It starts off with an intro that undoubtedly emanates supremacy. It then progresses, builds up speed, and before long Dani's screams are flying along at an impressive rate. It also contains alternative female accompaniment as well as deep male voices. The next track, Malice Through the Looking Glass, is of a slightly different style. It is a romantic masterpiece that combines fast and slow sections, male and female voices, and prominent guitar and synth effects perfectly. The final track in this sequence, Dusk and Her Embrace, is probably my favourite track of the album. It is a faster track than the previous two, and its speed creates a chaotic feeling. Sections of the song get progressively faster, culminating in powerful climaxes. This, combined with a good variety of male and female voices (including Dani's unique 'thousand words per minute' screaming), and skilful high-speed guitar, make this an unforgettable experience. |

| This is the most beautiful album ever. Read the lyrics to A Gothic Romance. It places you in the most gothic atmosphere and the literature intensifies this Old English feel sustained throughout this magnificent album. The use of classical instruments like the harp in Beauty Slept in Sodom and the female quior contrasts finely with Dani's powerful growl. All songs are standout tracks. Dusk has everything a cradle fan could ever want. it combines epic, soaring musical scores with haunting female vocals and rocking riffs. couple all this with Dani's screams and viola! you have the greatest black metal release ever! would anyone like to argue? if so, you have quite obviously not been living on this planet for too long or you haven't heard the storming drum beats, searing guitars and heartfelt royal screams on dusk yet. all i can do is to leave you with the best advice this side of the globe~buy it! buy it!! buy it!!! |

| Cradle rulz When I heard "Her ghost in the fog", my life changed for better. Those song is beautyful. After hearing "Her ghost" millions of times, I decided to explore more of the filthy world of Cradle. Man, what an incredible journey!!!!!. Every Cradle song sounds good. Their insane drums, their perfect guitars, their menacing bass, their sinister keyboards and, of course, their genial lyrics prove me that they are the real thing. | For those who mistakedly think that principle is the best album by COF, you are very mistaken. Also those who think that cradle suddenly turned commercial after Cruelty and The Beast should be ashamed. Then shot. About this album, i have to say it is by far the best of any cradle of filth album, and i strongly urge any fan to go out of their way to buy it. it really is amazing. There is a distinct air of Romanticism evident in the lyrics and the musical style. Highlights of the album are all the songs from 'Funeral in Carpathia' onwards, especially the guitar riff in the middle of 'Haunted Shores'. That takes my breath away every time. | After hearing her ghost on the fog ,i was dieing to get my hands on their music. Someone i knew dah all their albums and played me some stuff,i liked it alot. I bought whatever cradle album i could find,and it happened to be this one. I was disapointed at first and thought it was shit.I later gt midian and thought it was brill. Bt now having listened to dusk alot more i think its an epic album,beuatiful dark,erotic ,everything on this album rules. Its one of those albums that gets better with each listen.The only thing i dont like is Dani's shrieking,you cant understand a word he screams. But that doesnt take anything away from this masterpiece. I have since bought liv bait for the dead and it rocks,and now i'm gonna get vempire. i think cradles best song is from the cradle to enslave. |

| The first song I heard by Cradle Of Filth was Lord Abortion from the album Midian. After that I downloaded Bitter Suites To Succubi on mp3. I instantly fell in love with the shere genius and emotion that Cradle portray in their songs with such ease. After hearing this album I was looking for more Cradle, it's like a drug, their songs are a work of art and a show of masterpeice. Then I stumbled upon Dusk and her Embrace. Instantly I came to realise that whatever my thought on Cradle, and bitter suites to succubi, they were nothing like my love of this album, the chaotic and wonderfull emotions wich filled me, my favourite song has to be A Gothic Romance (red roses for the Devils whore) This song is beuatifull. Such emotional content is fealt while listening to any of cradle's work, and Dusk is their best album by far. Cradle are my favourite band and they always will be. Buy this album and you will not be let down. Dusk is a clasic example of what Black metal is all about and will set a lead for all future black metal artists to follow. I am dissapointed with CoF because of their latest album "bitter suites to succubi". I think it brings their standard down alot. From what i found there are two good songs... "suicide and other comforts" and the instrumental song. After Midian CoF seemed to go downhill, turning their music more commercial, turning it away from the guitar slashing, drum smashing black metal we once knew. |

By far, my favourite song of all time would have to be "A Gothic Romance (Red Roses For The Devil's Whore)".... when my friend brought me into this music, I never came out again.... | This is probably the best album for old-CoF fans.Surely the most epic to,with great atmospheric work of Damien and the screaming of Dani make this album worth while.The Artwork is the best so far seen by CoF(personal Opinion) The cd is not a concept album but still mainly about; Vampires ect ect..borught very clean and evil!This also will probably be the time when CoF spread their name around,V Empire normally should have been recorded with Duks...and Her Embrace but Dani said the material wasn't good enough for Dusk,something i don'"t support! | All I can just say is that, they are fucking fantastic. I used to hate them before, and now am crazy about them. I've experienced a lot of metal bands but I have to confess with no doubt that Cradle of Filth is the most greatest Black Metal band ever n ever. "Dusk n Her Embrace" is one of their great album ever I highly adore. There are wonderfull songs like "Heaven Torn Asunder", "Funeral in Carpathia", "A Gothic Romance", "Malice...", the title itself and so mush more that I surely can't get fucking enough of them. The songs are made with perfection and it's just job of the professionals(aka. Cradle of Filth). The Guitars, the drum, etc. are combined with a melodic female voice and long Dani's screams of course(the best). A perfectly great CD. And as I heard that some fans are complaining about their new CD that's "not good as the old ones", I most add that "Midian" and "Bitter Suites To Succubi" are damned great and freaky as "Cruelty and The Beast" n "Dusk n Her Embrace". The last thing: All these great songs, lyrics and artworks are coming outta talented people of course and no one else is talented as Cradle of Filth. If ya don't like them now, I'm sure on day soon you'll understand my meanings. |

| Personally dusk and her embrace is the greatest fucking cd that cradle has made, up to now. I still haven't heard bitter suites to succubi, but for now it is the best. I just can't get enough of Funeral in Carpathia, A Gothic Romance(Red Roses for the Devil's Whore, Dusk and her Embrace, and Haunted Shores. They kick ass and the athers are all worth listening to every time you put the cd into your player but these are my very favorites. | |||

| It's a very good album which takes it's straight way just from the first tune to the last song... so it's hard to mention some very good songs or find any boring song within... but at least... if I have a look at all their releases from 1994 till 2001... it's not my fav album... cuz this place is blocked by "TPoEMF" and "Midian"... but this output is directly behind them... ...and for the unbelievers three following tracks to listen to...: "Haunted Shores", "Beauty Slept In Sodom" & "Gothic Romance"... but if you wanna do it right... just listen to the whole album without any compromises... |

| This is by far the best work of Black Metal that I have evr heard. The song "A Gothic Romance" is my all time favorite song. "Humana Inspired to Nightmare" is a kick ass opening track and "Malice through the Looking Glass" is just brutal. With lyrics like: "Fleeting, enshadowed Thou art privy to my sin Secrets dead, wouldst thou inflict The cruel daylights upon my skin? Dost thou not want to worship me With crimson sacrifice So my cunt may twitch against thy kiss And weep with new-found life?" How can you not enjoy this? I ghive it an 50 out of 10! |

I have been a huge fan of cradle since they released The Principle of Evil... and never before or after have i heard something that is as outstanding and well done as Dusk. | Another stroke of genius. The band have an amazing way of making a kinnda horror movie in music way that haunts your dreams. Dani and the band r great as ever but this is no where near as good as Vempire(but what could be), but it is better than Midian. The artwork is a let down and Nicollas looks like Uncle Fester but the sounds r cool and thats what counts. But still I cant listen too it without realising how much better Vempie is. Actually I noticed that Vempire and Dusk can work as a whole if listened too together. Anyway this is a great album possibly there second best. Buy it now! | |||

| Greetings people. The album I've decided to review is "Dusk...And Her Embrace" by Cradle Of Filth. I chose this album because of its impact on the way I looked at music in general. When this first came out, it totally blew me away-this album just bursts with originality. Even if some people think that COF are just some gimmick, I think they should be taken seriously, as they are truly a force to be reckoned with. Kicking off with "Humana Inspired To Nightmare" you just know what's coming. This is actually an intro type song, lasting just over a minute in length before it grinds its way into "Heaven Torn Assunder". This track shows that COF are capable of so much, so don't be surprised by its genius when you hear it. Combining awesome lyrics, incredible drumming and wicked guitar riffs, it surely doesn't disappoint. Next up is my favorite track on the album, entitled "Funeral In Carpathia". I must admit it took me a good 3 months before I really got into it, but after I did, the riff was imbedded in my head like cancer. Dani has an incredible vocabulary; the guy just amazes the shit out of me. Nicholas Barker does not disappoint either, handling the Dream Theater type bar melodies with ease. "A Gothic Romance (Red Roses For The Devil's Whore)" was the song that blew my head off when I first got the album. It has everything; it still amazes me how well it's done. Especially the lyrics are a force to be reckoned with, Dani is a fucking genius. Next up is "Malice Through The Looking Glass". Another well done track. Here COF combines awesome melodies with intelligent lyrics once again. "The Graveyard By Moonlight" is an instrumental track, and it lets your mind wander where it has always wanted to wander before. Beautiful melodies, played with superior skill, make this another awesome Cradle track. "Beauty Slept In Sodom" is one of the weaker, if not the weakest track on the album. It's composed really well, but it just drags on for too long, boring the listener. They quickly redeem themselves with "Haunted Shores". My God, this track is just stunning. When I first heard it, it left me breathless. It still takes my breath away every time I hear it. The drumming is just fucking awesome, as are the guitar madness unleashed by Gian and Stuart. Robin Graves also does a fine job on the bass on the whole album, creating an earthquake like rumble. Lets not forget keyboard player Damien, who creates melodies so beautiful it's scary. Throughout the album he unleashes so much atmosphere it's almost too good to be true. Also featured on "Haunted Shores" is Cronos from Black Metal legends Venom, who delivers a smashing spoken word outro. In conclusion, this album is a must. It portrays everything that made COF so huge in the first place. If you like your Black Metal, and if you like it brutal, yet intelligent, this is the album for you. If you still don't have it, I honestly don't know what the fuck you're waiting for. Black Metal was never this exciting; it just doesn't get any better than this. Go buy. |

| one thing That dissapointed me was that benjamin wasnt on this album. I think benjamin is the best keyboardist of them all from CoF. i am borowing dusk right now from a friend, and i listen to it and i say its incredibly beautiful and i dont know what else to say. I still like TPoEMF and Cruelty better than Dusk. there is just somethign about them that makes me feel that way. i think that Cruelty shows intense evil and intellegance. i think i spelt that right HAHA anyways awsome review and awsome site | |||

| An excellent album in all aspects, but I just wish to say a little about how one should define "Black metal." First of all, this album is not black metal. It´s extremely good, yes. It is anti-christian and satanic, yes. But it´s not Black metal, unless you would use the term "neo-black metal". That´s a mistake many people (and other things..) often make. And even though I´ve heard it said that CoF considers themselves to be performing black metal, one shouldn´t accept this without a grain of salt. And for those that find these opinions quite agitating, I would recommend growing some sense of humour to understand CoF better. I suspect the members have some self-distance. Sicker maniacs are hard to find, but I strongly doubt that they are 100% serious about things like this. Now that I´ve ranted and probably gotten a whole lot of enemies and such, I´ll just congratulate CoF for performing what I percieve as a truly Unique form of music. Keep up the excellent work. Ps. | Para mí y creo que mi opinión la corroboran muchos fans de Cradle, éste "Dusk and her Embrace" es el mejor álbum del quinteto inglés y quizás, de todo el mundo metalero. La sensación que te deja temas como "Funeral in Carpanthia", "Red Roses", "Beauty slept in Sodom" o cómo no, el fantástico "Dusk and her Embrace" que le da nobre al disco, no tiene palabras para poder expresarse. La sensación del amor tan ligado a la muerte no sólo se hace bella y sublime sino que parece transportarte a una nueva dimensión en la que sólo existe un único "Yo" formado por la música y los sentimientos que se desprenden del susodicho oyente. Un auténtico trallazo en el cual Cradle se consagran en la cabeza del Metal Gótico, sin que ningún grupo pueda hacerle sombra alguna. Lo dicho, lo mejor del entorno metalero y una auténtica gozada para tus oídos y tu corazón, siendo la primera vez la más dolorosa y a la vez la más reconfortante. | |||

| No tengo palabras para describir la belleza y perfeccion musical de este album, esta por encima del entendimiento. Con los intrumentos y las voces juegan con un ambiente de los mas profundos miedos y terrores. Cuando oi este album ratifique que Cradle of Filth es la mejor banda de black gotico en el mundo. Mi track favorito es a Gothic Romance, combinan la velocidad con los riffs lentos y expresivos proporcionandole un ambiente excepcional. | I've been meaning to do a review for Dusk for a long time now, and finally I buckled down to do it. I will summarize my feelings by saying that this album is a masterpiece. I've never purchased an album where I listened to the whole thing 4 times within a 3 day period. From the symphonic introduction "Humana Inspired To Nightmare" to the blisteringly fast vocals of "Haunted Shores", this album simply kicks your speakers in with its non stop assault.
