The Principle of Evil Made Flesh
1994 Official Album (Cacophonous)
|
|
|
Before Cradle of Filth's first album, The Principle of Evil Made Flesh, the band released a number of demos (see Discography) which are of scarce availability. All of these demos were a lead-up to what I consider the greatest ever black metal release, and perhaps the greatest ever music release - The Principle of Evil Made Flesh. This album has absolutely everything one could want. The totally unique melding and harmony of instruments is something that really must be heard to be believed and the mixing in The Principle of Evil Made Flesh helps bring to life and intertwine each of these instruments in a grand manner. |
| Cradle of Filth are a band comprising of six members and on top of the usual instruments (guitars, bass, drums, keyboards) they quite regularly introduce accordions, cellos and all manner of male and female vocals to create an atmosphere which is both enthralling and absorbing. It is easy to tell that a lot of work went into this album and that Cradle of Filth are very serious about what they do. Not only is their music very creative and unique, it also requires considerable skill to play - due to the speed, intensity, and intricacy of the music, and for this reason I also consider Cradle of Filth as being masters of their instruments. |
|
|
The music itself is best described as pure, unbridled, untouchable and beyond criticism. I could almost call the music 'godly' except that the lyrics and band members tell a story which is quite the opposite, so maybe 'ungodly' is an appropriate description. Three tracks on the album are keyboard-based instrumentals which help to break up the intensity and to set the atmosphere for upcoming songs. The songs on this album have great variation in pace and style, yet remain so fluent in what is an epic tale of evil, dark and gothic lust. The rhythms are brilliant and unique and along with the keyboards help provide the basis for songs full of momentum and total feeling. On top of this are some of the most furious, chaotic and intense leads and guitar effects I've heard. Even the bass sometimes comes to the fore in some great rhythm lead-offs which are quite impressive. The drumming is far from predictable, in fact it is some of the best I've ever heard. In particular I like the loud snare/cymbal combinations as well as the bass drumming, which sometimes seems to create minor rhythms of its own. |
| The vocals are truly amazing, and judging by the concert reviews, are created without the aid of any artificial devices. They are extremely frenzied, intense, demonic and painful screams with which no effort is spared. This makes them a little hard to understand without the lyrics sheet, but they are meant to be that way. The assortment of other vocals including the deep male voice, the vampiric overture, and the sexy, lustful female vocals reciting phrases of evil, enchanting prose are easier to understand. The voices all combine in a perfect manner to create one of the great appeals of Cradle of Filth's music. It has to be said that Cradle of Filth are quite different from traditional black metal bands, who often keep things quite simplistic, tend to repeat rhythms for much longer, and who generally don't have clean sound due to the mix. |

The song that first got me into Cradle of Filth was the title track, The Principle of Evil Made Flesh. It is a very speedy and more straight-forward track than a lot of others, but is one of the best album openers I've heard. What lured me in at first was definitely the synthesised effects in combination with the rhythms in this track. It generally takes quite a few listens to fully appreciate any Cradle of Filth album to discover the mastery that unfolds and the Principle of Evil Made Flesh is no exception. The Forest Whispers My Name is a true classic, as to is The Black Goddess Rises and To Eve the Art of Witchcraft, and so the list goes on to what makes up one of the most pure and brilliant music masterpieces ever available. |

| I think probably their best album. Its original and the song lyrics are far darker and better than in any other album. its obvious that more effort has been put in the album and includes the classical COF tracks like 'Black Goddess Rises, The forest whispers my name and to eve the art of witch craft. there newest albums like fuckin nymphetamine are shameful. The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh is were the real vampyric Black metal lies. Phat Pat: Maximum Filth, Ov Da Stoners Triangle!!!"Begin To Toke, Feel The Smoke, As Depression Dies, Ignite To The Skies." P.S: Thats a clasic i wrote myself...............SMOKE DA REEFER |

| greetings first of all i would like to say that no one can compare midian (as some of u seem to do) with this classical ground breaking cd. It is by far the best album from cradle with great deapth and stunning classical pieces. It greats the most vamypre atmospheric mood. Plus i think danni's vocals have never bein as gud since this album. His stunning vampyric sounds have been lost to more ear rennding screams (which dont get me wrong , sound great). Also lets compare bitter suites to this album The black goddes rises. Fucking great song my favorite cof song out. black godess rises II terrible lact charecter mood and from the sounds of it lact effort. plus its lost the great vampyre sounds. So for all u midian ass lickers out there. Get alife u know who u are!!!!! |

| it's calling.....must answer.... sorry, i must have dozed off! THE PRINCIPAL OF EVIL MADE FLESH IS A KILLER FUCKIN' ALBUM THAT PUTS OTHER BLACK METAL BANDS LIKE SLAYER TO SHAME!!! | |||

| Fuck off Azmodan, what right have you even to be here? Principle is certainly not the best COF album by any means, (that honour goes to dusk and her embrace-see my review), however it is a good album in it's own right. Dani's voice sounds overstrained in this album, although it does not spoil it entirely. A personal favourate of mine is 'A Dream Of Wolves in the Snow', but i prefer the remixes of 'Summer Dying Fast', 'The Black Goddess Rises', and 'The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh' that feature on 'Bitter Suites To Succubi'. That's not to say that this is not a fine debut album, From the single biggest force in black metal. Also, people who think that fans who have only been following the band since midian are wanna be faggots, will you kindly go hang yourselves, as it was 'Her Ghost in The Fog' that got myself, and many others into cradle of filth. I personally hate seeing little seven-year-old kids running around in hoodies too, but not everyone is a pathetic wanna be, and where would cradle be in ten years if no one new got into their music? Those who share my views, E-mail me at Apokrypha@hotmail.com. Dusk and Her Embrace Forever!! |

| A brilliant debut album! Maybe not aswell recorded and executed as other efforts but if they re-recorded it, it could tear black Metal the new arsehole it needs, it would kick their other albums to SODOM and back! The whole album creates a mystical feeling and effect, the same that i got from reading Dracula! It makes u feel lke ur standing in a Carpathian Forest, dripping with blood and chewing out ur guts!!!!!! It creates that whole gothic theme which just fails on albums post 'Cruelty and the Beast'. Definately buy it! |

| Definately not my favourite cradle album but certainly not the worst. It has elements of originalltity and mysterious melodies that the other albums don't have... I imagine if i had heard this album first like most othe hard core cradle fans, then i believe i would love this album like no other, but alas, t'was MIDIAN that i fell in love with... It does paint a picture in my mind. It conjurs images of snowy forests, howling wolves, crisp snow crunching underfoot and a chill wind that cuts through your bones. It is definately an album to have. Much better than any other black metal album released at the time. Praise be to my fallen god Danni... Your slave forever Kayozz.... |

| Hello sinners , i have a lot of experience when it comes to cradle of filth 8years to be exact, so iv heard PRINCIPLE OF EVIL MADE FLESH a fair few times it's very good although lacks elements cradle dident gain till VEMPIRE but it has a harder element that all the others have lacked looking at it in big picture without princible would cradle have given what they have? so it dose play a crucial role in the making of cradle 666reagan |

| The Principle of Evil Made Flesh was a true work of art. It begins with an eerie piece of keyboarding, and continues masterfully into the albums title track. It is a raw, powerful song filled with the primtive vampyric vocals that I personally miss in Dani today. Moving on, we have The Forest Whispers My Name, which in itself is a Cradle of Filth classic, and personally one of my favorite songs of all time. Next is Iscariot, and odd intrumental song that led strangely well into individually my favorite song of all time: The Black Goddess Rises. Everything about the song is incredible. The overlapping vocals and lyrics that could only have been written by Dani himself. Truely as masterpiece. It then goes into my favorite instrumental by Cradle of Filth as of yet, One Final Graven Kiss. Simply majestic in its tragic, yet powerful, moody sound. Well done. This song is followed up by the A Crescendo of Passion Bleeding, and Of Mist and Midnight Skies, bothrawand undualted songs of intensity and power bent on dominating all other songs in the genere. They did well in their quest. Next comes In Secret Love We Drown, a piece of strange, what one could call music, but often times finds himself skipping over it in the future. Theres always the oddball of the masterpiece. A Dream of Wolves in the Snow was a beautifully played song that I personally envisioned a waning winter day in the forests of Camelot. Magnificent. Finally, the Album concludes with Summer Dying Fast, a song of great depth and magnitude. Simply incredible, namely Nicholis Barker's ascention into the world of legendary drummers. This song is what broke the barriers of his skills. The Principle of Evil Made Flesh was and always will hold a great oportion of my love for the Black Metal genre. | |||

| First off, vieuwing this album without looking at Midian ect..this is their best album.People talk about the production that is kind of low and yes i agree, but to me and other metalheads this doesn't matter all that mcuh,it actually brings the band meaning more to life.At the time that this album was released it sounded very re-freshing.With big Black Metal bands like Darkthrone making it all big,CoF made a more Horror-Macabre album after making some descent demo"s.The Ttile Principle Of Evil Made Flesh describes this album.with songs like "The Black Goddess Rises" CoF is a band seperatly. | |||

| I feel it is a milestone in the death metal genre of music. Cof have always been innovators and have inspired a countless number of bands. It may be old and sound cheezy, but it is taken into consideration that it was thier first album and funds weren't adequate. Given to the significance of CoF to the death metal community, it is pioneering and priceless. | |||

| i think that TPoEMF is the best work of cradle of filth, less face it cradle is no longer a black metal band i still love cradle i dont care but no one can take it one of the best fucking album of blaack metal history ........... THE PRINCIPLEOF EVIL MADE FLESH. |

| This is a truly great albulm as are all the rest. I dont think cradle to enslave or vempire good as they are, don't contain enough depth. TPoEMF is totally opposite. It is probably the most brutal albulm cof have ever done. I like cruelty dusk and this the most while midian is v good but too different to compare to these 3 classics. ! more thing, I just bought Bitter suites to succubi and it seems rather fukin shit!!! it has no theme, most of the songs are of TPoEMF with the origonals sounding much better!! it just doesnt sound quite right. BUT HOPEFULLY IT WILL GROW ON ME AS HAVE ALL OTHER COF ALBULMS. HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK FUCKERS!!!!!!!!!!!! |

| "The Principle of Evil Made Flesh" is a masterpiece of its own... it was the crown of all their outputs... but now after nearly six years of knowing CoF... just their latest album ("Midian") has any chances to reach the beauty of the first one... ...and here just for the unbelievers to test the following tracks...: "The Black Goddess Rises", "Summer Dying Fast" & "Of Mist And Midnight Skies"... and these three tracks I mentioned doesn't mean that the others are of less quality... |

| TPOEMF is surely not COF's best work but is a cult albulm nontheless. Dani's vocals are not in the same level as Cruelty or Midian but the guitars & rythm section & keyboards are great. A blackmetal classic!! | |||

| Cradle are the most favorite bend of mine and i believe TPOEMF was their best album it came before the electronic stuff, and i believe that's the main reason for me to like it so much. it features some of the best songs ever and after i first heard their demo, TFD, i just had to buy the first CoF cd to come. i recommend this album to all of you, CoF fans, but i still think you just might have it already. i also liked Cruelty and the beast.. i havr the special limited duble CD eddition, so i guess that is the main reason for me to like the album (because of the hallowed be thy name in the bonus CD, i'm a huge fan of maidem and i think the cover was totaly amazing) okay and so long CoF fans from all over the globe... yours truely, Cruelty |

| 19 Dec 14:40 | 9/10 | Wrath Grimm | |
| The Best COF album ever! Don't listen to trendy Korn and Slipknot loving kiddies who say that From the cradle.. and Midian are the best, nothing beats this. The production is not as clinical as the new stuff but it sounds good like that! Black metal shouldn't have crystal clear production! If u like Cradle because they make the cover of Kerrang then u will hate this u trendy piece of shit! But if u love dark metal then go buy it!!!!! | |||

| i think this is one of the most better albums made in the scene of black metal, the voice and the sinthetysers creat one atmosphere dark. | |||
| 24 Nov 19:19 | 8/10 | Iscariot | |
The Forest Whispr my name". Altamente recomendable. | |||
| 24 Nov 13:44 | 7/10 | 100 | |
| this one's cradle of filth's worst album... well, i haven't heard whole of the 'vempire' album, but i think i for sure can say that this one's not their best. if you like dani's voice blurred, dark and borring, then this one's for you. but, if you perfer him screaming like a real fucking bat, then this one will dissapoint you. although it's not what I expected, it's still a nice album, but fon't buy this one if you haven't heard their other albums (especially Midian), because it's not how they sound nowadays. thay are such a great band, and I guess that this is a great debut, but still I don't advice you buying it if you haven't heard their other records. but buy it anyhow, it is good. | |||

| It's good, but I bought it after Cruelty And The Beast. It took a very long time to get used to it (I nearly took it back!) but when I did, it's a good album. I do, though, prefer their newer, faster, stuff, esp. Funeral In Carpathia (BQOBD). Overall, though, it's worth £14. | |||

| I think that this is the BEST album from Dani & Co. Dark atmospheres, dark sounds, and a lot of black fucking metal! My favourites are the title track, "Summer Dying Fast", "The Forest Whisper my name", and "Iscariot". This album is rated everywhere like the best work of the band. | |||

| I think this is a very good album, but not as good as the rest of the CoF albums (except "From The Cradle To Enslave EP"). A lot of you complain about the quality of this release, but I think it's very good, better than the Enslave EP. Most of the songs are very good, even if I don't like those instrumental parts that much. Some of you call this raw black metal, but it's not black metal at all if Darkthrone or Emperor is black metal. As they say themselves, this is "Supreme Vampyric Evil"... This is not at bad album at all and I think every Cradle fan should have this album, a very important part of the CoF history... |

| Indeviblatly the greatest complamation of old school black metal ever recorded on c.d format. The sounds emited drive like nails through your soul and leave you with with an immense feeling of sorrow and pain.revived from the grave like the undead, doomed to walk the earth in search of blood , the cradle fills my mind with a sense of nothingness, greed and lust. For a first effort these boys have stepped up to the plate and they have delivered!and wasn't it a treat...... how r u noxious nightcrawler? |

| Cradle of Filth. What else needs to be said? Just the name inspires me to immediately find the CD and begin listening. The first song I ever heard by Cradle of Filth was "Beneath the Howling Stars" from the Cruelty and the Beast CD. For a long time beforehand, I'd been a fan of bands such as Emperor, black metal bands with shrouded vocals and intense riffs. Cradle of Filth has completely redefined musical genius for me. They are not black metal, and they are not death metal. They are far better than any black metal, even Emperor, and way better than any death metal. Cradle transcends the traditional monotone vocals and variation-lacking riffs of even the greatest black metal. They have incorporated melody in a way I had never dreamed possible. Without a doubt, Cradle is my favorite musical group in the world, and they are in my mind the most intricate musical geniuses around. I've not purchased TPoEMF yet, but I've downloaded every song from it off of Napster (I don't approve of what Napster does, but hell, I'll keep using it as long as it's up) and I have to say that they started strong and only got better. The Black Goddess Rises and the title track are my personal favorites. As with all Cradle of Filth, intelligence and beauty flow freely through the lyrics and melodies. Dani's voice is unmatched in the world of vocalists, and he has the most amazing vocal range I've ever heard. His lyrics are completely incredible - and though I don't exactly agree with his theologies, I easily forget our philosophical differences when listening to the ease with which he weaves a lyrical web. Cradle of Filth forever! I hope you live longer than the Black Goddess herself and never cease to make amazing music. Dani was truly placed upon this earth for the sole purpose of creating the music he creates. I understand Cradle of Filth has a US Tour planned after the release of their next album (due out around Halloween). I hope and pray to God that they bring the show to Atlanta, GA, and the Masquerade so that I can witness the Dark Angels themselves live and in person! I could go to my grave happy after seeing Cradle in concert! WHEN PEOPLE SAY IT'S OVER I KNOW THAT IT'S A LIE BECAUSE GOD MADE HEAVY METAL AND IT'S NEVER GOING TO DIE |

| I'm quite a new fan, and I don't know as much about CoF as some others at the time... But the first CoF album I bought was TPoEMF, and I liked it so much that I bought all the others. But it still remains my personal favourite. It sounds great, and the lyrics are beond all criticism, unlike the other albums, which focus way too much on the Countess... I still can't understand why so few eople in my area like CoF. | |||

| this is one of the best BLACK METAL albums ever released, unlike cradle of filth other albums exept 'vampire dark faerytales in phallestein", that they are not really black metal im not saying 'dusk and her embrace' and 'cruelty and the beast' aren't good albums, they are great, but they just ain't black metal. there are quite alot instrumentals here...altought they are really good...dani vocals here are awsom and they are fit for this album, and he ain't sinigng really 'high' unlike their next albums (exept in the middle of the sons "the principle of evil made flesh"). there are also lot's of keyboard stuff here...and they sound very good... with gothic lyrics....what's make "The principle of evil made flesh" great gothic black metal. it's really ain't like cradle new stuff and you people that start hear them from their last 1-2 albums albums you should hear this one. |

| I cant like this album very much....it sounds too much like a demo and danis voice sounds too harsh and not high pitched like it usually is. The female voices are out of place, extremely cheesy and predictable...where as it sounds like they obviously matured in their later albums greatly. The keyboards arent varied too much as they use the organ a bit too much and they sound like cheapass walmart keyboards. But,like most bands in this genre, they sound primitive but greatly mature with experiance. | |||

| All hail the new flesh...This album, although old in its release date, still manages to crush skulls. Principle.... set the standard for black metal, a standard that CoF have far surpassed themselves, and others have failed to equal...Summer's Dying fast, and the chill of a black winter is available to chill us all...The blood is the Life... | |||

| I have to say that this does very well sound more demoish. At first I really thought this album was shit. Dani didn't have his high, shrill screams but all in all the music and the way the vocals flowed were well constructed. It just took some getting used to, now I love it. I still don't think it's their best however. I enjoyed the instrumentals a lot, each had it's own atosphere and emotion to them. "Summer's Dieing Fast" was my favorite song on here. Yeah "The Forest Whispers My Name" is good but I still enjoyed my previous stated song more. | |||

| A excellent work of ART,for there first album it was simply magnificent it's a total diffrent kind of black metal the music embark's you to a totaly diffrent world,to make this kind of music takes a LOT of hard work and patience, also to make the lyric's so complexe and evil,Dani Filth has definetly done a excellent job on the vocal's,i am satisfied that this album passes the 10 rate. | |||

| I would have to agree with many of the individuals who said that this album is one of the greatest black/deaht metal albums I have ever heard. Although it's production leaves much to be desired. If you have listened to thier latter albums then this one seems much more like a demo than a full blown album. What do you expect from a band that was just starting. They only got better with time. | |||
| 19 May 21:00 | 10/10 | Iseneye | |
| Their best album. TPoEMF achieved emotional peaks that were never recaptured with their latter efforts. This album feels like they mean what they say, while their latter works feel like a facade, a show. | |||
|
| 16 May 16:17 | 6/10 | Jaytanica | |
| It sounded like a demo to me. WHile not toatally usesless you still hear something in the way of greatness in the making. The vocal effect that counds like a cancer box left something to be desired though. I feel it was a great start. Much like Megadeth's Killing is my business. | |||
| 11 May 07:10 | 7/10 | Sinned | |
| TPoEMF is one of those albums that you remember as great, and then when you listen to it again, you forgot how the boring parts made it suck. First of all, the production is weaker than their subsequent releases, but this shouldn't be a problem unless one has heard the later releases before this one, or unless you're a Darkthrone fan. Second of all, there are a bit too many instrumentals on the album. In Secret Love We Drown ends up annoying my ears with the incessant tinkling. Despite these shortcomings, there are absolutely ripping songs on here. I happen to think that black metal with this sort of production is best exploited with fast, raw songs, and the bookend tracks do just that. You had to be enthralled by such an obviously hungry band at the dawn of their career. |
