Vempire or Dark Faerytales in Phallestein

Vempire or Dark Faerytales in Phallestein
1996 Official Album (Cacophonous)

After already making what I considered to be the greatest black metal album and certainly one of the greatest ever debut albums, it would seem impossible for a band to improve on something that was already so brilliant. Cradle of Filth, however, are of such mastery and creative perfection that they have managed to do just that.

According to Nicholas (the bands drummer) this EP was made simply as an 'out-of-court settlement' to release the band from their contract with Cacophonous, the record label who they'd been fighting with since the release of The Principle of Evil Made Flesh. Considering that this was just an EP between albums and between record labels it is truly a remarkable effort, for it would be an impossibility for other bands to achieve something this brilliant under the best of circumstances.
Vempire - Back Cover Woman
Vempire - Crying Statue The CD starts with what is one of the best, most intense intros that you could ever hope for. The opening track, Ebony Dressed for Sunset, builds up and launches the album with the classic high-paced drumming, a furied combination of intertwining leads and synthesised effects and ends with the sexy, desire-filled female voice. The track flows beautifully onto what is a reworking of The Forest Whispers My Name. I was ecstatic when I first heard this track again because it was a favourite of mine from The Principle of Evil Made Flesh. They sped it up quite a lot, used some new synthesised effects, and introduced new female speech elements.

The track is indicative of the differences between Vempire and The Principle of Evil Made Flesh. Vempire, it can be said, is generally a faster album whereas TPoEMF is perhaps a slower and more passionate masterpiece. Vempire also has more occurrences of female vocals, some being slightly different from those on TPoEMF, as well as more prominent synthesised effects.
After The Forest Whispers My Name, comes what is my equal favourite (along with the final) track on the album - Queen of Winter, Throned. It starts off in the same way as 'A Dream of Wolves in the Snow' did. (On your first listen you might start to get worried that this EP was just a reworking of their first album.) However, it soon moves boldly in its own direction in what is an epic tale that is made up of 2 or 3 sections, that altogether lasts 10 minutes. It contains everything that makes Cradle of Filth so brilliant (see my TPoEMF review). Vempire - Back Cover Girl
Vempire - Vampyric Lesbians Nocturnal Supremacy starts off slowly, but impressively, with catchy bass drumming and gradually builds up speed until it is flying along with Dani's screams and an 'in-tune' female choir voice synthesis, which is used a lot in this song. It too is another classic Cradle of Filth track. The album now has its sole instrumental track in a lead-up to the final assault that is The Rape and Ruin of Angels. This starts off with extreme speed in a brilliant opening section which is then broken down to a short keyboard / synthesiser intermission. It then builds up again with many further twists and turns to finish off the album in perfect, classy and powerful Cradle of Filth style.

Vempire has more of an underlying sexual theme with sounds of 'vestal masturbation' as well as burning orgies and the like. A lot of work went into the CD covers of which there are two (one being 'Vempire' and the other 'Dark Faerytales in Phallestein') as well as other images of vampiric, sadomasochistic lesbians and a naked, gashed woman.

I like "cruelty and the beast" better.

"from cradle to enslave" is a perfect song

but I dont know why they dont record that song in another album..

they recorded 2 songs again in new album.

but I can't understand why they didn't put

"from cradle to enslave"

19 Jul 09:08 9/10 jestere
Not their best album, but it does contain their best song ever: Queen of winter.
The songs structure reminds me a bit of "cruelty", which is my fav album.
If only more bands like this on existed...

10 Jul 02:53 10/10 unholygoat
Vempire is by far the most well made music I ever heard. (as with all of their albums) I need to get "The principle of evil made flesh & my CoF collection will be complete!! I say to All of Cradle of Filth, keep it up. I'm one of your biggest fans & enjoy your music very much!! (I wonder if I spelled any of this right!!!!!!!!)

Best work by Cof since they're out from hell kicking arses! Musicaly and lyrically excellent. Dani's voice in it's best performance ever. F**king Perfect! One negative point--> it's length. It should be an album an not an EP. AVE Cradle Of Filth!!!

DANNI U R MY SATAN!!!!

04 Jun 22:03 10/10 azmodious
i found this album to be very satisfying! for some perhaps it was not the greatest but i feel all of cradle's albums are works of art and should be charished by all!

21 May 15:00 8/10 diavlo
"V empire" is not their best work but nevertheless it's of high quality and has some very nice songs... but at least it has a too short playing time which could also be a reason for giving just eight points...
...and just for those unbelievers to test the following three tracks...: "Queen Of Winter Throned", "Nocturnal Supremacy" & "The Forest Whispers My Name" (and this renewed version of the song from TPoEMF is much better)... of course the other tracks are kicking ass too...

29 Apr 12:03 9/10 mazzasangel
as with all cradle albums it's beautiful But it will never hold the place in my heart that crultey and the beast does!

03 Apr 05:30 9/10 anttihanski
Queen of winter, throned! Damn it's good. This whole album is great! But still I think that Midian is the best...

22 Mar 07:20 1/10 zeppelin
I love Dani's voice....It's fantastic.

20 Mar 22:13 10/10 Demonschainsa
By far CoF`s best album if not the greatest Black Metal album or even greatest album ever. Definetly up there with Sex Pistols Never Mind the Bollocks album. The artwork is at its best. The 3-d Images r fucking amazing. Danis voice rules and all the other voices r just right. The remake of The Forest Whispers my Name is fucking the citizen kane of BM tunes. Not since Black Sabbath as metal sounded this good. Fuck Korn or Limp Bizkit and the other shit not so heavy metal bands. No matter what anyone says this album kicks Midians ass. What I dont get is how this album is better than Dusk and Her Embrace when this is the sounds not good enough for that album. Fucking Buy It Now!!!

15 Mar 15:41 8/10 hellbound_hea
The music here is very
good, not quite as good as their more evolved work in ''Cruelty...'' or the mighty ''Midian'', but it is a very enjoyable album if
you are into CoF. It is considered a mini-CD, but its duration of 40 minutes certainly is not small. Prepare yourself for a very
twisted roller coaster with this album. The band had fun while creating it, and it shows...

1. Ebony Dressed For Sunset - After a short SFX intro it starts off furiously. Very dark and hateful in tone, with its tongue
placed in its cheek, but very cool nonetheless.

2. The Forest Whispers My Name - It begins slower than the previous track. Cool bass. Again, it has a very mysterious
tone. There are also many thrash elements. Some twisted melodies are thrown in for good measure. Very very twisted...The
part where a female voices says a monologue is brilliant. I can't say anything bad for this track. Thrash, goth, black, a blending
of styles...

3. Queen Of Winter, Throned - Perhaps the best track. Its intro irritates me...you will either love it or hate it...When the
music starts however it's excellent. Peculiar mournful melodies...a very twisted outcome. The lyrics also are completelly
insane...there are many parts with female vocals as well. Some parts remind me of a later effort, ''Cruelty...''. Close to the
middle there is a slower goth part, with some female moaning chorals that is brilliant. After this we are treated to utter thrash.
Dani's vocals at this point are almost desparate. Usually I am not a big fan of his vocal style (the highlight of CoF is the excellent
music…), but he does a good job. A rythym section at the last half of the song is one of the best thythm guitars I have listened...The track closes brilliantly with some female moaning.

4. Nocturnal Supremacy - Its intro is the best in any of the tracks of the album. A very imposing rhythm guitar part. Very
dark and twisted...Some backing female chorals add a lot. Then thrash kicks off. Very good drumming. Dani's vocals kick
serious ass. This and track 3 are the best on the record.

5. She Mourns A Lengthening Shadow - Now we are treated to something different. A mournful instrumental. Cradle of
Filth's instrumental pieces are good, and this is no exception. A very sad melody, that reminded me a bit of the soundtrack of
the film ''Frankenstein'' with Robert de Niro. A very good piece, with some ''Elfmanesque'' elements... As in ''Prtrait of the
Dead Countess'', this track sounds very emotional, and if you don't know that it's Cradle of Filth you might be tricked that it is
indeed a sad piece...as for me...I enjoy it even if I know that it has its tongue in its cheek...

6. The Rape And Ruin Of Angels - The closing track of the album really serves. It is like dark thrash metal, with the
distinctive Dani vocals. Some goth melodies in it are brilliant. A brilliant track.

All in all, all I have to say is that this is a very good album. All of the tracks are good or excellent. I am a huge fan of the ''campy'' goth style of Cradle of Filth, and this album in my opinion is a must for any fan. However, if you are new and you have never bought any albums by them, try ''Dusk...and Her Embrace'' first.

My Rating: 8/10

- The Hellbound Heart

22 Feb 13:30 9/10 wargasm666

You canceled your concerts in greece 3 times and now that i am in UK to study, you finally played in Greece. I just can't seem to be able to find any concert dates in England. Can someone please help me?
Midian is fuckin' great!!! Even better than "dusk..." in my opinion. Keep up the good work mates.

24 Nov 19:30 7/10 Iscariot

23 Nov 14:59 7/10 batty
all i have to say is dani is beautiful and his voice is oral plesures...

Esta corta muestra musical de COF es brillante. Introducen grandes dosis de una velocidad y poder aplastante. Es uno de mis albumes favoritos. Simplemente es de lo mejor que se ha podido hacer en estos tiempos.

13 Nov 12:07 9/10 apacius
One of my favourite albums (if I had to pick one, i like them all really). CoF does it again with a redo of some of their earlier stuff. The sound seams to be recorded with a better quality. Once again CoF shows its superb blend of harmonic keyboard melodies and female vocals (not to mention great guitar and a variety of vocalistic sounds by Dani). I believe CoF is the best well rounded band that I have ever heard. I would have to say that 'Queen of Winter, Thorned' is my favourite song off the album.

05 Oct 12:52 9/10 Angi.L
Yep. it's fucking great and it will beat shit out of anything else

02 Oct 21:57 7/10 Max_Goth

Dusk, TPOEMF and cruelty is much better

29 Jul 15:59 8/10 Corwin
Although it is the last album I still have to buy (but I already got it all thanx to mp3 :), it contains CoF's Best Track Ever : 'Queen of Winter (Throned)'. Yeah, this one sounds Gr3aT!!! 10 minutes of Pure Ecstasic Adrenalin flowing like a virgin's blood through your veins... Still hope there will be an as good f**king track on Midian. Better than evrything. It really deserves to have a clip on it someday (if one exists yet, forgive me --I discovered CoF only a month ago and I'm back online for only three days)... A clip with less gore-slashing-and-blood than FtCtE... Something that could be considered as visually great as the Fabulous Lyrics o' the track... Definitely the best CoF track ever, which makes stuff like Nocturnal Supremacy sound unachieved. (I thought Summer Dying Fast and A Dream of Wolves in the Snow were the limit of what is great until I found QoW.) I just regret that the other tracks sound way too short --why ain't QoW the last track of the disc??
'The Blood is the Life
Love is Forever'

"vempire of dark faerytales in phallustein" is excellent,
"queen of winter" and "the forest whispers" my name are my favourit tracks.
this album is a classic, everyone should have it.

Great album. Forest Whispers My Name is so-fuckin`-great that I`m amazed. Queen.. Is a master-piece. She Mourns a Lightening Shadow , though it is instrumental and a short one it is fantastic. But Vempire is not going to get 10, because next album can be better than anyone they produced till now.

08 Jul 18:11 1/10 Qeonmagoria
Everything is good except for the pornographic album cover. My mom saw that and threw my album away and I hadn't even listen to it yet. :(

13 Jun 09:21 10/10 cerberos
CERBEROS,

"DARK FAERYTALES IN PHALLUSTEIN"
Well done , DANI and the boys you've created a fucking monster! this E.p delivered so much intencity, i almost fucking killed myself from drinking so heavily while listening! compared to "DUSK" and "CRUELTY" the guitar value and orchestral manoeuveres fucking R.I.P literaly.I fucking love you guy's!

11 Jun 03:28 10/10 Valek
Out of all the cuts on the CD, "Oueen of Winter, Throned" is the best one. Ok, truth, it is the best one to Fuck to.

08 Jun 15:41 7/10 Viking
Not their best, but not their worst. The reworking of The Forest Whispers my name is fucking EPIC! I just feel that something is lacking with this, but I can't put my finger on it...

07 Jun 21:38 10/10 guyagra
cradle at its best this must be the hardest album i have ever found although some might say from the cradle to enslave is not far behind !

Creo que es quizas el album que haya cambiado mi forma de ver las cosas y el cruelty and the beast pues completo esa forma de ver todo mi mundo esterior.
Mi palabra favorita es:
CRUELDAD.

Att:vempire...

12 May 18:55 9/10 DeadSummer
This is probably the most damn near flawless piece of work that CoF have released, and the fact that it was released as a filler just to get Cacophonous off their backs accentuates the band's supremity even more. "Ebony Dressed..." (great title) is easily among the greatest album openers ever, and pisses all over "Humana Inspired to Nightmare" (which I never liked much) later in their career. The reworking of "Forest..." was fucking ASTOUNDING and gets my vote for the most brutal thing Cradle have ever done - compound that with the fact that it has some of Nick's grooviest beats..."Queen Of Winter" was my favourite CoF song for a while, then I realised that while it is absolutely stellar, it has equals on every album. Then "Nocturnal Supremacy" - I fucking hated this track when I first heard it; thought it was way too monotonous. But now I love it cos 1) it's fucking heavy, 2) it's fucking fast and 3)It's got some real poignant atmospheric riffs (check the live track doing the rounds to see how it can make your ears weep).
"She Mourns a Lengthening Shadow" ranks alongside "Carmilla's Masque" and "Portrait..." as being the most endearingly over-dramatic lament in the Cradle repertoire. BUT! I never liked "Rape and Ruin..." much - it has a killer intro and first few minutes, and no other metal band has ever sampled tweeting birds to such excellent effect, but then Cradle must have imbibed too much joy-juice, cos the riffs become pretty unlovable. Still rocks though, esp. that middle bit with the bass riff and keyboards, that rocks.....The lyrics have no equal, but then that's always been the case...yadda yadda, lovely yadda, yadda, conclusion: this album contains Cradle's best work, shame it only has 6 tracks.........yuss, my first review! *crowd roars*

By far Cradle's best release. This is the album where the production and the talent come together to shine like it should. From beginning to end this EP burns. Starting with ever ominous intro "Ebony Dressed for Sunset", which is the perfect precursor to the stellar re-make of "The Forest Whispers My Name" from their first release. However, I do question the inclusion of this track on the cd. What was it's purpose? To show that the new members have the talent of the members they replaced, or was it to give the fans a reason to get into the cd? Either way, much better than the original recording.

Then enters the almost 18 minute deluge of music as "Queen of Winter, Throned", by far the best track on the cd, and probably of COF's career, explodes. This track is 10 minutes plus of classic black metal with some interesting elements of thrash which never seems to lose the attention of the listener. As this song hits it's final chord, it is immediately followed by the first COF song I ever heard, "Nocturnal Supremacy." A great song, but probably my choice for weak link on this cd.

"Nocturnal" is followed by the instrumental "She Mourns a Lengthening Shadow" which is composed entirely of instrumental of all time. It just seems to have this infinate sadness to it that draws me into Damien's world. Truly, he is missed since his departure after the "Dusk..." album.

To close the album, COF picked up the pace and burned through "The Rape and Ruin of Angels." Not much can be said to describe this song other than great. It was a great choice to close this album and to end COF's bitter relationship with Cacophonous Records.

This is truly the album that was the blueprint for 90's black metal. However, it seems that COF has been unable to follow this album up completely. Multiple personnel problems and musical differences plague the band and many wonder if they have the ability to produce another cd with the production and song quality of "Vempire." We shall se what the future holds.

This album is certainly the best that Cradle of Filth have done. Where TPoEMF lacked in production (and I still hate Of Mist and Midnight Skies) and was too slow in the middle of the album, Vempire totally rips. Perhaps it's better that black metal albums stay under the 45 minute mark, because you can't remain so extreme for a prolonged period of time before the extremity wears thin. However, putting in slow parts to create valleys creates just that: valleys, and boredom. Vempire manages to keep a high the entire time. The reworking of The Forest Whispers My Name is even more brutal than the original version, and was a great choice to show that the new members had the talent required to propel the band into the upper ranks (which it did). However, the problem with Vempire and Dusk would become apparent on Cruelty: The new members couldn't write as wicked material as the people they replaced. Still, Vempire manages to rip and snarl, but I question Dani's statement that this album was comprised of material that wasn't as good as the Dusk material... because quite frankly, Vempire is the best album they have ever done.

I have to say that Queen of Winter, Throned was the best song on this album. The reworking of "The Forest Whispers My Name" was absolutly amazing.
